PV Riding on a New Server
For those of you who are interested in such things, we've moved to a new dedicated VPS. Since it's inception, Patchvault was hosted on Heroku, which gave us a lot of flexibility, but became very expensive very fast ($300/mo + for Heroku services alone, which does not include image storage).
We had multiple Standard-2x dynos, and jumping to the next level would incur a 5x cost increase (so $1500/mo). That was not going to fly.
We were extremely limited on memory, which caused most of our longer-running PDF tasks to fail (any lodge, needs list, etc with over 200 items typically would time out or 500).
We're now swimming along nicely with an expandable VPS at 24GB of RAM, 3 dedicated CPUs, and a cost that is 1/10th of where it was for Heroku. Our image storage and caching on Amazon S3/Cloudfront is still a significant cost, but nowhere near what we were spending on hosting alone.
We'll be revisiting the PDF generation functions now that we've cleared the RAM hurdle, and hope to have some of those long-persistent bugs cleared out soon.
