OA 75th; 1938 - 2013; 1969 Old Hickory Council patch with segments
The century-old Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America, based in Winston-Salem (NC), has been fully supportive of Wahissa Lodge since Scout Executive William E. Vaughn-Lloyd suggested the creation of the lodge to Scoutmaster George Kellock (Kel) Hale, Jr., in early 1938. Mr. Hale was a member of Unami Lodge #1 of the Order of the Arrow in Philadelphia, PA. The color and design of this flap are based upon a 50th Anniversary patch, with its multitude of segments, that was created in 1969 to celebrate the upgrade in 1919 of the Winston-Salem Council (renamed the Old Hickory Council in honor of United States President Andrew Jackson in 1941) to a “First Class Council,” which involved employing a scout executive. Notice the red arrowhead segment on the left side of the flap; this segment was presented to Boy Scouts who participated in Order of the Arrow activities during the anniversary year.
